Description
  • Exquisite plates from the Sasanian era

The Sassanid emperors, whose roots were from Persia, ruled Iran from 224 to 651 AD (427 years); and the last period of the Sassanid monarchy was before the Arab invasion of Iran, and they were considered a superpower of the ancient world alongside the Roman-Byzantine Empire for more than 400 years. The flag of Iran during this period was the Kaviani flag, and it disappeared after the overthrow of the Sassanids.

A large number of gold and silver vessels made during Sasanian rule have survived in Iran and Mesopotamia, reflecting an ancient Near Eastern tradition that spread to the West, where vessels made of precious metals also became symbols of power and prestige. These objects were given as royal gifts to important individuals within Sasanian Iran and beyond its borders.

And the design of this exquisite gold plate, called the 2500-year-old Sassanid plate, was produced in the Iranian Museum of Gold and Silver Stamps.

The images on this vessel depict the story of Bahram-e-Gur, or Bahram V, the Sasanian king (c. 420–438 AD). The story seems to have been popular for centuries – both during the Sasanian period and during the subsequent Islamic period.
