He is the ruler and head of state, as well as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the guardian of the constitution of Qatar. The emir is the most powerful person in the political system of Qatar. The emirs of Qatar are from the Thani family, which originally trace their origins to the Banu Tamim tribe, one of the largest tribes in the Arabian Peninsula. The current emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has held this position since 25 June 2013.
