For some, they are a symbol of large size, for others, a symbol of laziness, and for others, a symbol of gluttony. Many find their shape and appearance lovable, while some are afraid of them. Bears are the largest carnivores in Iran and have been present in literature, legends, and folklore of different regions of Iran since ancient times. The bear family in Iran has two members, the “brown bear” and the “black bear”. This difference is not only related to their appearance and body color, but there are also many differences in the habits, diet, and distribution of these two bear species. Brown bears are distributed in the north, northwest, and west of the country, but black bears only live in parts of the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, and Kerman. The black bears that live in Iran are of the “Baluchi black bear” subspecies, which lives only in Iran and Pakistan, and according to the report of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), they are in a “critically endangered” status.
