He was an Iranian politician and Twelver Shiite cleric who served as the first leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran from 1979 until his death in 1989. He led the 1979 revolution that overthrew the government of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and ended the Iranian monarchy, and subsequently established the Islamic Republic of Iran through a referendum.
